EDC Receives 25th Anniversary Resolution from Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors

On Tuesday, June 4, the Environmental Defense Center received the following unanimous resolution from the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors in honor of EDC's 25th Anniversary.

RESOLUTION HONORING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE CENTER

WHEREAS, the Environmental Defense Center was established in 1977 as a nonprofit corporation providing education, advocacy and legal services to a broad array of community groups concerned with protecting environmental quality; and

WHEREAS, for the past 25 years, the Environmental Defense Center has ensured meaningful public participation in governmental and legal processes affecting land use planning and environmental decision-making;

WHEREAS, the Environmental Defense Center has worked to preserve and protect open spaces and natural resources in Santa Barbara County, including Point Conception, the Gaviota Coast, Carpinteria Bluffs, Burton Mesa Chaparral Preserve, Sedgwick Ranch, Douglas Family Preserve, Channel Islands National Park and National Marine Sanctuary, and the Los Padres National Forest; and

WHEREAS, the Environmental Defense Center has helped protect water quality and watersheds through its work on Project Clean Water and the South Coast Watershed Alliance, through its advocacy for improved flood control and development standards affecting the County's rivers, creeks and streams, and by enforcing state and federal clean water laws;

WHEREAS, the Environmental Defense Center has improved the health of our people and region through its Environmental Health Project and its education and outreach efforts to farm workers, health care providers, and the agricultural community;

WHEREAS, the Environmental Defense Center has helped protect Santa Barbara County from the adverse effects of offshore oil and gas development by ensuring proper review of leasing and development proposals, and by supporting the County's consolidation, transportation, abandonment, and air quality policies;

WHEREAS, the Environmental Defense Center has effectively worked for the protection of endangered species and habitats that are necessary to ensure the sustainability of our region's unique biodiversity and ecology;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT AND IT IS HEREBY ORDERED AND RESOLVED that this Board of Supervisors honors the Environmental Defense Center upon its 25th Anniversary and commends the Board and Staff for their continued dedication to preserving, protecting and enhancing the environmental quality of life for the citizens of Santa Barbara County.
